A Custom for Me
I am not, in general, strongly into custom razors. I have no doubts about their quality or such, but usually the aesthetics don't appeal. However, whenever I saw one of Charlie Lewis' (a.k.a. Spazola) razors posted online, the appeal could not be denied. I find his work balanced finely between primitive and sophisticated, organic and deliberate.
And with every post I saw, I found myself ever more desirous, until I could resist no more and I requested one.
I asked the man himself to make me a razor, saying only that I wanted nothing larger than 8/8, the hollower the better, and I like long tails. This is what came of that.

It is rough, intentionally so, with the sinuous curves of a snake. It is notched subtly for the thumb, and the long tail balances the heavy blade nicely. the scales are one-piece G10, textured by hand to match the shank.
It is rare for custom makers to make hollow ground razors; I assume due to the extreme difficulty, this was a skill hard-won even for the traditional razor grinders. But this razor is well ground, thicker than, say, a singing razor but hollow indeed.

It shaves well and clean, though it is longer than the razors I'm used to. I love pretty much everything about it, and I am deply grateful to Charlie for his hard work in making it.

Lewis Razors ROCK!
Hey Jim,
Nice Lewis! I have an 8/8 Sheffield style that I just love. Very hollow grind like yours.
Can you believe Lewis dropped 4 razors on SRD yesterday (4/18/12) and today there was but one left in stock. <mouth falls open> Seriously, his pattern-welded razors went like hotcakes, and the only one left is the least expensive at $650.
Go Charlie!
:)
Cheers,
Mark
